To
enable us realize the above named objectives we have the
following activities/project models:
(1)
MICRO FINANCE /ENTREPRENEURIAL
DEVELOPMENT:
This
constitutes the bedrock of our Economic Empowerment Program and
centres around the following areas:
(i)
Formation
of Cooperative Societies - Here
women are grouped into cooperative societies according to their
interests (farming, food processing, trading, artisanship etc.)
to enable them access credit and other forms of business
finance. Initially we started with eight (8) women groups but as
at today we have grown to over 121 Cooperative Societies
distributed across 6 (six) states of the Niger Delta Region of
Nigeria.
(ii)
Credit
Delivery - WHEDA-Nigeria
sources for funds and on-lends to member/groups to encourage
income-generating enterprise.
(iii)
Entrepreneurial
Development - this
entails periodic and continuous training and skills acquisition
programmes. It also involves provision of inputs/machinery to
individuals and groups.
Note
that above programmes are not restricted to women, as WHEDA-Nigeria
membership is also open to youth clubs and men's groups who are
ready to subscribe to the ideals of our organization.
(2)
MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CARE SERVICES:
(i)
Training
of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAS) and provision of
equipment;
(ii)
Ante-natal
care (counseling sessions);
(iii)
Health
Education/Advocacy.
WHEDA-Nigeria
organizes workshops/campaigns on Adolescent Reproductive Health,
HIV/AIDS, Breast/Cervical Cancer, Tuberculosis, Anaemia, Harmful
traditional practices etc.
(3) SCHOOL
HEALTH PROGRAMMES :
This
involves mainly free de-worming exercises for school children
coupled with inspection and lectures on personal cleanliness.
(4) SANITATION
/HYGIENE:
Through
this programme, women and youth groups are organized into task
force to keep roads and surroundings clean in the villages. In
addition, the women are taught simple techniques of domestic and
personal hygiene - cleaning of toilets and food preservation.
(5) NUTRITION
PROGRAMME:
This
programme sees to the training of women in the areas of food
processing, enrichment and preservation techniques, intake of
balanced diet etc.
(6) ADULT
EDUCATION /LEADERSHIP TRAINING:
WHEDA-Nigeria
sponsors interested members to undergo the Adult Education
Programmes of the Government and establishes literacy classes
for the women in their communities.
(7) HEALTH
INSURANCE SCHEME:
This
was to encourage the women to save for the rainy day. On that
note, they used to save three Nigerian Naira (N3.00) a month so
that they could benefit from the programme. Each member was
entitled to N60,000.00 if she suffers from hernia, entopic
deaths, pregnancy, caesarean section and other major medical
treatments.
The
borrower is given 6 months moratorium interest free. After six
months without refunds, 2% is charged per month.
Family
members are committed e.g. husband or first son, so that if the
borrower defaults, the family would be held responsible for the
debt.
(8)
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
Women are taught simple soil management
(conversation techniques that enables them utilize even marginal
land for their farming activities). Environmental conservation
becomes even more critical because our people operate in an
environment that is prone to erosion, oil spill, flooding, fire
disaster particularly around fishing ports.
